Grand Rapids textbook rental program expands

Grand Rapids Community College students were among the first in the nation to be able to rent their textbooks from their Follett’s campus bookstore, but now the company is expanding the program to colleges across the country, the Grand Rapids Press reports. The Follett Higher Education Group announced Friday texts will be rented at 850 bookstores, including Eastern Michigan University, Bay College, Jackson Community College, Kettering University, Macomb Community College and Mott Community College.  GRCC students in the fall semester were one of six campuses to rent books as part of a trial run, and the company has since expanded the program to 27 schools. Under the plan, students were able to rent a new or used book for 42.5 percent of the retail price. The GRCC store typically buys back books for half the retail price. So a student could purchase a book for $100 and get $50 back — but only if the store is buying back that particular edition.
